The 'Go Fund Me' Trend Of Begging For Money

This whole 'Go Fund Me' thing is really getting out of hand. I just saw a fundraiser for someone trying to raise $500 so they can buy a 'flight case' in order to fly with their Gong. WTF? I mean, really? This is ridiculous. 

Why not do like everyone else on the planet and save up your money to buy it?

In their 'Go Fund Me' campaign, they brand themselves as a Gong Master, and state that healing others is their mission. Yet they are begging for money to buy a gong case. What they want is a molded plastic Humes & Berg case. I just bought one of those a few months back. I'm not rich, but I paid for it out of my savings. I also bought an actual flight case years ago.

 There are currently 3 Gongs I'm looking at buying. I'm saving up my money over time to get them. I'm not begging the general public to fund my gear desires. 

 Just so you know, I'm all for Kickstarter type campaigns where people help fund a new recording or a new product. In this case, you are basically pre-ordering the product you will receive. I've given to various recording campaigns that I was interested in. But I draw the line at people saying, “Please send me money so I can buy something I want.”

 Get with it people. If you have to beg for money to buy gear, then you are doing something wrong. Maybe you should get a different job.

Cracking/Breaking Gongs

This comes from a Facebook percussion group I'm in. Apparently it was either an outdoor marching band or drum corps show: “Kid cracked a gong on the first hit of our show Saturday because he didn’t warm it up. Of course. It’s a decent sized crack, and we don’t have $1000 laying around to buy a new one. Is there any easy way to fix it? It's a Zildjian gong, idk how big, I'm going to GUESS 40"? It's cracked right at the edge of the gold ring and the outer ring, and it's about 4 inches long. The mallet we're using is not that hard and should not have done that kind of damage.” Without actually having been there, or seeing the Gong in person (apparently it was a Chinese Chou Gong), I can only speculate on this, but my first impression is that the kid overplayed the Gong by hitting it way too hard. What's The Best Gong To Buy?

I field questions nearly everyday from people asking about drums, percussion, and especially Gongs. Whether it's via e-mail, message, or even a phone call. the most popular question is:  “What kind of Gong (or singing bowl, or bell, or ride cymbal, or hi-hats, or drum head, or various other things) should I buy?” And I wish that I could just give everyone a nice, tidy, easy answer. But there are none. Part of my initial reaction to the question is, “How should I know?” This is not like buying toothpaste , where I can suggest a whitening one if your teeth look dull, or a freshening one if you have bad breath.
